Bio-Solids Management – Welsh Water

Compass Informatics developed a platform to help water authorities bio-solid management compliance.

Welsh Water required a Bio-Solids Management solution that could be configured to interface with their existing solution.

Compass’ Biosolids Management System (BIO) is a COTS application that provides Welsh Water with an end-to-end solution for managing their nutrient-rich sludge or bio-solids.

About Welsh Water

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is a not-for-profit company which supplies drinking water and wastewater services to most of Wales and parts of western England that border Wales.

In total, it serves around 1.4 million households and businesses and around three million people – and supplies nearly 830 million litres of drinking water per day.

It is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991 as amended by the Water Act 2014.

About Bio-Solids

Biosolids are the residual material left over from sewage treatment processes, and can be spread on land as a fertiliser for agriculture.

Biosolids can contain heavy metals, pathogens and other harmful compounds so their use  is strongly regulated by the Environment Agency.

Compass Informatics has worked with several water authorities to develop a cloud based tool to replace mainframe application and monitor the journey of biosolids from the time they leave the treatment plant to spreading on farm land.

Project Requirements

In 2018, the Compass team was tasked by Welsh Water to design and configure an instance of our Biosolids Management System integrated into the Welsh Water business and technical environments.

This was part of a larger Sampling Analysis Management (SAMs) programme which sees the replacement of the existing Quality Database System (QDB).

The SAMs programme completed a detailed review of the market place and determined that only the Compass Bio COTS software product meets Welsh Water requirements for Bio-Solids Management.

Compass’ Solution – BIO

The platform tracks and manages full operations and reporting for Biosolids. The implementation of the BIO solution for Welsh Water delivered the complete BIO system including;

  1. Compliance with the UK’s Environmental Agency regulations.
  2. The Safe Sludge Matrix
  3. Biosolids Assurance Scheme (BAS)
  4. The Nitrate Regulations
  5. Nutrient Management Matrix

Solution Benefits

  • Soil sample results on request & automated soil sample results updated in BIO.
  • Monitor the journey of biosolids from the time they leave the treatment plant to the time they are spread on farmland.
  • Manage the documentation for all biosolids disposals accomplished.
  • Manage the documentation produced at the end of the process and sent to the farmer.
  • Allows for Stockpile Inspection Reports.
  • Integration with JRP weigh-bridges for input of treatment centre and delivery information.

The BIO solution was installed on premises in Welsh Water with user access internally via web browser and externally via Citrix VPN.
